For Mayor of Newport News
A lifelong Virginian, career educator, and experienced legislator — Phillip Hamilton brings over four decades of service to Newport News. Born and raised on the Virginia Peninsula, he is committed to building a safer, stronger, and more prosperous city for every resident.
Phillip A. Hamilton was born April 9, 1952 in Richmond, Virginia and has spent virtually his entire life in service to the Hampton Roads community. A graduate of Newport News' Warwick High School, he went on to earn his undergraduate degree from the University of Richmond and advanced graduate degrees in Educational Administration from the College of William & Mary.
He began his career as a teacher in Newport News Public Schools — the district he would go on to serve for decades — and rose to become an Assistant Principal and Coordinator of Professional Development. In 1988, the residents of the 93rd District sent him to Richmond as their State Delegate, a seat he held until 2009.
Phillip Hamilton's agenda focuses on the people, neighborhoods, and economic future of Newport News — because a strong city starts with strong communities.
Decades of experience in Newport News Public Schools give Phillip a deep understanding of what students, teachers, and families need to thrive. He will champion fully-funded schools, competitive teacher pay, and modern learning environments.
Newport News residents deserve to feel safe in their neighborhoods. Phillip supports adequate staffing and resources for the police department, violence-prevention initiatives, and stronger community–law enforcement partnerships.
From the waterfront to our business corridors, Phillip will work to attract new employers, support local small businesses, and leverage Newport News' strategic location to create good-paying jobs for residents.
Responsible investment in roads, water systems, and green spaces will strengthen our city for generations. Phillip is committed to sustainable growth that protects the Chesapeake Bay watershed and our coastal environment.
Every Newport News neighborhood deserves investment and attention. Phillip will focus on affordable housing, code enforcement, neighborhood revitalization, and ensuring that growth benefits all residents — not just a few.
City Hall must be open, accountable, and responsive. Phillip will prioritize fiscal responsibility, open-door governance, and regular community engagement so every resident has a voice in decisions that affect their lives.
Newport News is not just a place I represent — it is the city where I was educated, where I taught, and where I raised my family. My commitment to its people is absolute.
